As cancer becomes more prevalent given today’s environmental conditions, make sure to fill your diet with these highly nutritional but also beneficial foods and herbs that can help prevent and fight cancer. Don’t worry, it won’t drain your pockets.
- Vegetables. We all know that vegetables are definitely healthy – like, the epitome of healthiness. It is unsurprising that most of the foods in this list are mostly veggies. Of course, there are two divisions: the sea vegetables and the cruciferous or green, leafy vegetables. The sea vegetables are actually just a type of algae that are rich in iodine wherein a deficiency of this results in a higher risk of ovarian and breast cancer. They are also rich in calcium, potassium and other minerals that promote an alkaline environment, making it more difficult for cancer to survive. Examples are kelp, kombu and nori. For the green, leafy vegetables, they can stimulate enzymes that detoxify cancer-causing agents before they can do any damage.
- Mushrooms. They contain many bioactive molecules and anti-tumor agents like polysaccharides, alkaloids, phenolics, flavonoids, tocopherols, carotenoids, folates and organic acids. Examples are reishi and chage. Moreover, studies have shown that eating reishi for an extended period of time hinders tumor growth and boosts immunity of people suffering from advanced stage cancer.
- Hemp. It has the ideal ratio of 3 to 1 for omega 6 to omega 3. Hemp seed oil also contain 80 percent essential fatty acids that are important to immune function by oxidizing the cells and restoring health at a cellular level.
4. Spices and herbs. Many spices and herbs have shown promise in fighting cancer. Garlic, turmeric and black pepper, cayenne and jalapeno peppers, mint, oregano and cinnamon just to name a few. Most of these herbs prevent cancer. For example, the garlic. In a randomized study involving 3000 human subjects for seven clinical years, it was shown that the risks of developing cancer was cut by 60 percent for those with the highest allium intake – where allium can be found in garlic. Additionally, garlic also contains alliinase that produces anti-carcinogenic compounds. For turmeric, on the other hand, it targets 10 causative factors of cancer like DNA damage, chronic inflammation and disruption of cell signaling pathways. Numerous studies have shown that curcumin – turmeric’s miracle compound – is a potent anti-carcinogenic that blocks cancer development in a number of ways.
