The number of recorded cases of cancer continue to rise. It could be because of our increasingly polluted environment that increases the amount of free radicals in our body. Heavy metals, transition metals and industrial solvents are just some examples of exogenous sources.
However, what we eat is also a big factor in our risks of developing cancer. If you want to keep cancer away from you, these foods not only give nourishment to our bodies but also clean and get rid of cancer-causing agents called carcinogens. Additionally, they are not detrimental for your wallet.
Sea veggies. These so called sea veggies are actually a type of algae. Examples would be the kelp, Kombu and nori. They can help prevent breast and ovarian cancer because they are rich in iodine, a substance not available in the average diet. Lack of iodine is linked to the development of the stated cancers. Moreover, they also contain lots of calcium and potassium and minerals that make your body more alkaline, making it harder for cancer to survive.
Cruciferous, or green, leafy vegetables like broccoli and cabbage. These vegetables are capable of stimulating enzymes that clear the body of carcinogens before they can affect the cells. This particular property links it to reducing cancer risks.
Mushrooms, like reishi and chage. They have various bioactive molecules and anti-tumor agents like polysaccharides, alkaloids, tocopherols, phenolic, flavonoid, carotenoids, folates, ascorbic acid and organic acids are some to the said bioactive molecules that help prevent cancer.
Garlic and onion contain the compound allium which, studies have shown, decreases the cancer risks by sixty percent. Garlic also contains another enzyme called alliinase, which produces anti-cancer compounds.
Turmeric. Causative factors involved in cancer development like DNA damage, chronic inflammation and disruption of cell signaling pathways are targeted by this spice. Furthermore, a component of turmeric called curcumin is an effective anti-cancer food.
Hot peppers, like the jalapeno, is abundant in vitamin C which is an antioxidant that helps prevent cell damage due to free radicals. Not only that, it also contains an active alkaloid compound called capsaicin which shows promise in fighting against cancer cells.
Aloe Vera contain polysaccharides which present powerful immunomodulatory and anti-tumor properties. Its polysaccharides also exhibited macrophage-activating properties and producing plenty of nitric oxide, which has anti-tumor potential.
